Apple Has a New CEO. What Changes for the Products You Actually Use?

Apple has officially entered a new era.

On September 1, 2026, John Ternus became Apple’s new CEO, replacing Tim Cook after almost 15 years at the top. Cook is not leaving the company completely. He is moving into the role of executive chairman, giving Apple some continuity while Ternus takes control of its day-to-day leadership.

That makes this more than a change of name on Apple’s leadership page.

Ternus is a longtime hardware executive who has spent more than two decades at Apple. He has been closely involved with products including the iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch and AirPods. 

So what does the new Apple CEO 2026 actually mean for the products you use?

The short answer: probably not much immediately. But over the next few years, you could notice a difference.

Who Is John Ternus?

Ternus joined Apple in 2001 and eventually became senior vice president of Hardware Engineering.

His background is important because he isn’t primarily a finance or operations executive. He is an engineer and product leader.

During his time at Apple, he has worked on major hardware lines and played a role in the company’s transition to Apple silicon in the Mac. He has also overseen hardware development across several of Apple’s most important product categories.

That gives him a very different profile from Cook.

Cook’s Apple became known for operational efficiency, supply-chain management, services growth and turning existing products into enormous businesses. Under his leadership, Apple’s annual sales reached $416 billion in 2025, while the company’s value grew to more than $4.5 trillion.

Ternus inherits that enormous machine.

His challenge is figuring out what comes next.
