After years of holding out, the world’s largest retailer is finally giving its customers what they’ve been begging for. Walmart has officially announced that it will begin accepting major tap-to-pay options, including Apple Pay and Google Pay, across its retail ecosystem.
The Rollout Timeline
The transition to modern contactless payments won’t happen overnight, but the initial phase is beginning immediately.
- August 24, 2026: Tap-to-pay features will be activated at select Walmart and Sam’s Club locations.
- End of 2026: The capability is expected to be fully deployed across all U.S. store and club locations.
- Mid-2027: The final phase will bring tap-to-pay to all of the company’s fuel stations.
The End of a Long Holdout
Walmart’s adoption of Apple and Google Pay marks a surprising reversal of its long-standing corporate strategy. For years, the retailer outright refused to support universal tap-to-pay technologies, opting instead to heavily promote its own proprietary ecosystems:
- Walmart Pay: An app-based system requiring users to open the Walmart app and scan a QR code at the register.
- Scan-and-Go: Sam’s Club’s flagship checkout-skipping technology.
- CurrentC: In a largely forgotten effort prior to 2016, Walmart even teamed up with other major retail giants to launch “CurrentC,” an alternative mobile payment system explicitly designed to kill off Apple Pay. The initiative ultimately failed and was shut down.
Meanwhile, Apple Pay’s ubiquity surged. It is now accepted by 85% of retailers in the United States, making Walmart’s resistance increasingly glaring and frustrating for everyday shoppers.
