Can Nollywood Break the Box Office Again This December? – Innovation Village

December is when Nigerian cinema stops feeling like a regular industry and starts feeling like an event.

The cinemas fill up, families look for something to watch after Christmas lunch, friends make movie dates, and filmmakers compete for the same audience that has become increasingly willing to spend money on local stories.

This year, however, the question is bigger than which movie will be the Christmas blockbuster?

With major titles lined up for December, including Funke Akindele’s The Four and EbonyLife’s The Secret Lives of Baba Segi’s Wives, Nollywood could be heading into one of its most interesting end-of-year box-office battles yet. The Secret Lives of Baba Segi’s Wives is scheduled for December 4, while The Four is expected to follow shortly after.

And there is an even bigger number hanging over the conversation: ₦800 million-plus.

That is roughly where Call of My Life finished its cinema run, making it the highest-grossing Nollywood film of 2026 at the time.

So, as December approaches, the real question is: will any of these films go beyond it?

Funke Akindele is back in familiar territory

Few names carry as much weight during the Nigerian cinema season as Funke Akindele.

Her track record is difficult to ignore. Everybody Loves Jenifa became one of the biggest Nigerian cinema releases, while A Tribe Called Judah previously demonstrated just how powerful a December release can become when the right combination of star power, comedy, family appeal and marketing comes together.

Now she returns with The Four.

That immediately creates another question: can Funke Akindele break her own ceiling again?
