If you love soca, get ready to experience the genre in a whole new way as Brooklyn Public Library (BPL) celebrates one of its pioneering figures, Machel Montano, with Journey of a Soca King: The Exhibition.
Opening Aug. 22 at Central Library, the exhibition, created by the Machel Montano Foundation for Greatness, celebrates Montano’s remarkable career and his lifelong contributions to soca music and Caribbean culture. According to a press release, the exhibition is accompanied by programming at branches throughout Brooklyn and offers visitors an intimate look at the artist’s journey, from his childhood in Trinidad and Tobago to his rise as one of soca’s most influential global ambassadors.
Over more than five decades, Machel Montano has played a defining role in bringing soca to audiences around the world. Born in Trinidad and Tobago, the birthplace of soca, Montano began performing at just 7 years old in 1982, according to his website. His debut album, Too Young To Soca, released in 1985, quickly earned widespread acclaim and established the young performer as a force to watch.

Journey of a Soca King: The Exhibition features a curated collection of artifacts from Montano’s extraordinary career, including iconic costumes, trophies and vinyl records. At Central Library, visitors can also listen to selections from Montano’s extensive catalog at the library’s vinyl listening station and watch pivotal moments from his life and career.
