Chelsea head into Sunday’s London derby without the midfielder who shaped almost everything they did last season.

Enzo Fernández completed a joint British record £125 million move to Manchester City on deadline day, and Xabi Alonso now has to find fresh solutions in the middle of the park without any direct replacement arriving through the door.

Losing an all-rounder of that quality would rattle most managers. Fernandez created the most chances of anyone at Stamford Bridge last season, contributed 16 goals and provided the joint-most assists at the club, so his departure leaves an obvious gap in output.

However, Alonso appears calm about the situation, insisting that the group already at Cobham has what it takes.

Speaking after Chelsea’s wild 4-3 win over Brighton, Alonso worked hard to calm any panic among supporters. He pointed to the varied qualities within his current midfield rather than dwelling on who left. “Valentin is young, but he has a great energy,” he said, name-checking several players by their first names as he laid out his thinking.

Reece James, Malo Gusto and Jordan Henderson also earned mentions, with Alonso stressing that composure and know-how matter just as much as raw talent. Meanwhile, Henderson himself remains sidelined by a wrist injury sustained at the World Cup, so his impact will have to wait a little longer.
