Did you know ChatGPT, Claude and Grok all experienced outages on the same day?

On September 3, users across the world suddenly found some of the biggest AI chatbots struggling to respond. ChatGPT, Claude and Grok each experienced technical problems within hours of one another.

The unusual timing quickly caught the attention of AI users. These platforms compete directly in the fast-growing generative AI market, yet they all experienced disruptions on the same day.

For many users, the outages meant more than simply being unable to chat with an AI assistant. People rely on these platforms for coding, research, writing, image generation, business tasks and everyday productivity. As a result, even a short disruption can interrupt important workflows.

OpenAI confirmed that ChatGPT and Codex experienced elevated error rates on September 3. The company said it was investigating the problem before applying a fix and restoring the affected services. OpenAI later marked the incident as resolved.

Claude also experienced a significant disruption. Anthropic described the incident as a partial outage caused by an infrastructure issue. The problem affected Claude.ai, Claude Code, Claude Cowork and the Claude API before the company restored the services.

Grok faced its own outage around the same period. xAI’s status page showed that the service experienced problems across platforms, including its web, iOS and Android versions. The company later restored normal traffic.

The timing raised an obvious question. Could one problem have caused all three outages?

So far, there is no confirmed answer.
