Tupac Murder: Duane “Keffe D” Davis Found Guilty Nearly 30 Years Later

Nearly 30 years after Tupac Shakur was shot to death on a Las Vegas street, a criminal conviction has been secured in the hip-hop artist’s case.

A Nevada jury determined on August 31, 2026, that Duane “Keffe D” Davis, the former boss of South Side Compton Crips, is guilty of first-degree murder with a deadly weapon, according to the Associated Press. The jury reached its verdict after three hours of deliberation., according to The Associated Press and Reuters.

A murder that became a cultural mystery

When Tupac Shakur was shot in Las Vegas on Sept. 7, 1996, he was 25. The rappers attended a Mike Tyson-Bruce Seldon heavy weight boxing match at the MGM Grand. Earlier in the evening, Shakur and his team had a fight with Baby Lane, one of Davis’ nephews.

At about midnight, Shakur was in a car with co-founder of Death Row Records Marion Knight when the car was shot at by another car.

Two weeks later and Shakur had died from his wounds. According to The Washington Post, “Investigators struggled for decades to determine who was killed after a group of friends drove into the Las Vegas Strip and was ambushed by another group.” For years, no suspects have been arrested. Until now, “in 2023, nearly 27 years later.”

The man prosecutors said organised the attack

Davis was not accused of pulling the trigger.

Instead, prosecutors presented him as the organiser or “shot caller” who arranged the attack after the confrontation involving his nephew.

According to prosecutors, Davis helped obtain the firearm and participated in the search for Shakur before the group eventually encountered the rapper’s vehicle.
