Rodrigo Riquelme scored the decisive goal in the 63rd minute, producing a composed volley from Cucho Hernández’s cross to the back post to secure all three points for Manuel Pellegrini’s side.
The tightly contested encounter offered little between the two teams before Riquelme’s finish gave Betis the breakthrough and ultimately settled the match.
The victory gives Pellegrini’s side an early boost as they look to build momentum at the start of the new campaign.

Attention now turns to Saturday, when José Mourinho begins his second spell as Real Madrid coach away to Espanyol.
