Iran has threatened a “devastating” response to new US economic measures after President Donald Trump vowed to impose what Washington describes as its toughest sanctions yet against Tehran.
Iran’s Armed Forces Chief of Staff, Major General Ali Abdollahi, said the country was prepared to respond across land, sea, air, air defence and cyberspace if the United States proceeded with the new threats.
The warning came after Trump announced an “economic D-Day” against Iran, promising an unprecedented campaign of economic warfare and isolation aimed at forcing Tehran to abandon its nuclear programme and reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is expected to outline the new sanctions on Monday. Trump has also warned countries, businesses and financial institutions against providing what he described as any “lifeline” to Iran, threatening them with economic consequences.
Iranian officials have rejected the US pressure, arguing that previous sanctions have failed to force the government to change course. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi described the proposed measures as illegal and warned that they could further damage the global economy.
China has also opposed additional US sanctions, with its Foreign Ministry saying pressure and sanctions would not resolve the conflict and urging Washington and Tehran to pursue diplomatic negotiations.
The latest confrontation comes as the Strait of Hormuz remains heavily disrupted by the conflict, affecting global oil supplies and raising concerns over energy prices.
The US-Iran standoff has continued for months despite attempts to reach a lasting agreement. Washington wants Tehran to end its nuclear programme and reopen the strategic waterway, while Iran has rejected key US demands.
