Portugal international Joao Cancelo has completed a permanent return to Barcelona, strengthening Hansi Flick’s defensive options ahead of the new La Liga season.
The 32-year-old became a free agent after mutually terminating his contract with Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal and has now signed a three-year deal with the Spanish champions.
Cancelo spent last season on loan at Barcelona, helping the club secure the La Liga title, before agreeing to his permanent return to the Camp Nou.

“It’s my dream,” Cancelo said after completing the move.
“I’m where I want to be, and I am very happy. I like the club; I identify with it. I feel loved here and I promise to give everything for this club.”
Cancelo returns to familiar surroundings
Cancelo first moved to Spain in 2014 when he joined Valencia from Benfica on loan before establishing himself as one of Europe’s leading full-backs.
He subsequently played for Inter Milan, Juventus and Manchester City, while also spending part of the 2022-23 season on loan at Bayern Munich.
The Portugal international first joined Barcelona on loan from City for the 2023-24 campaign and returned to the club on loan again last season.
His latest move represents his third spell at Barcelona and his first permanent transfer to the Catalan giants.
