The Viper Strikes Again: Randy Orton’s Return Cost Cody Rhodes at SummerSlam

As Cody Rhodes was about to live out another pivotal moment of his WWE career, a serpent slithered into the spotlight. 

Randy Orton is back, and there couldn’t have been worse timing for “The American Nightmare”. SummerSlam has served as a playground for many epic moments and surprises, but very few fans saw “The Viper” laying claim to a moment in such drastic fashion.

When Rhodes seemed poised to cap off a journey all his own, Orton’s surprise appearance changed everything, costing Cody the victory and leaving the WWE Universe shell-shocked.

It was pure Randy Orton. In his more than two-decade-long career, Orton’s legacy has been etched into the wrestling landscape thanks to striking at the most opportune and least opportune moments.

Between his signature RKO to interrupt any match and his tendency to deliver life-altering betrayals, the 14-time world champion hasn’t required a formal invitation to be impactful. And his return at SummerSlam reminded us all that when the venomous Orton is present, no one is ever truly safe. 

A Return That Changes Everything 

Randy Orton’s comeback was far from a typical guest appearance. The timing immediately shifted the trajectory of the main event scene in WWE.

Over the last few years, Cody Rhodes has solidified himself as a megastar.

Since returning to the promotion in 2022, he has participated in WrestleMania main events, won a major championship, and spearheaded several of the company’s biggest storylines. SummerSlam appeared to be yet another milestone; instead, it served as the genesis of a brand-new rivalry. Instead of celebrating, Cody found himself left to question Orton’s abrupt arrival.

Could it have been jealousy?
Was this the result of a years-old score to settle?
