Nigeria bagged three more gold medals on Day 4 of the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, with Rafiatu Folashade Lawal, Edidiong Joseph Umoafia and Onome Didih winning their respective weightlifting events, www.aclsports.com reports.
Defending champion Rafiatu Folashade Lawal successfully defended her Commonwealth Games title in the women’s 58kg event, smashing Commonwealth Games and Commonwealth records on her way to gold. She lifted 103kg in the snatch and 126kg in the clean and jerk for a record total of 229kg, finishing 14kg clear of Canada’s Ann-Sophie Taschereau.
Earlier, Edidiong Joseph Umoafia had started Nigeria’s gold sweep by winning the men’s 71kg title with a Commonwealth Games record total of 319kg. He opened with a Games record 147kg in the snatch before lifting 172kg in the clean and jerk to finish ahead of Samoa’s Joseph Tafi (314kg) and Nauru’s Elgin Moses (310kg).
Onome Didih claimed the women’s 53kg title after breaking the Commonwealth Games record in the snatch with 93kg. She went on to set another Commonwealth Games record in the clean and jerk with 113kg before completing a Commonwealth Games record total of 206kg. Didih finished ahead of India’s Gyaneshwari Yadav (199kg), while Canada’s Rebeka Groulx won bronze with 178kg.
Nigeria’s sprinters also enjoyed a successful outing in the 100m heats, with Favour Ashe, Nicholas Fakorede and Oluebube Ezechukwu all booking places in Tuesday’s semi-finals.
Favour Ashe won Heat 1 of the men’s 100m in 10.10 seconds ahead of Kenya’s Meshack Babu, while Nicholas Fakorede finished second in Heat 10 with a time of 10.21 seconds behind Lesotho’s Mojela Koneshe, who set a national record of 10.07 seconds. The pair joined Kayinsola Ajayi in Tuesday’s men’s 100m semi-finals.
