New York is taking another major step toward making the beauty industry more inclusive. On Sept. 1, the New York Department of State announced a new requirement that will ensure cosmetology students receive training working with all hair types including natural and textured hair. This marks another major win in the fight for natural hair care equity.
New York Cosmetology requirement for natural and textured hair: How does it work?
According to the press release, under the new law, signed by Governor Kathy Hochul, New York cosmetology and natural hair styling education programs must now include instruction focused on textured hair and a range of hair patterns. Students will learn about hair and scalp properties, hair care, treatments, styling methods, and other techniques commonly used when working with textured or natural hair.
The goal is to make sure future licensed cosmetologists and natural hair stylists are prepared to confidently serve every New Yorker, regardless of their hair type or texture. Importantly, the new coursework will be added to existing educational requirements without increasing the total number of hours students must complete to qualify for a license.
