Spotify, in its latest publications, has announced the introduction of new measures to help identify AI personas making music.
Spotify has announced a new system designed to identify artist profiles that use AI-generated, human-like identities as the streaming platform continues to address the growing presence of artificial intelligence in music.
The new “AI Personas” label will help listeners distinguish between profiles representing real people and those presenting an AI-generated identity.
Spotify said the label is focused specifically on the identity of an artist rather than how their music was created. This means an artist can use AI as part of their creative process without necessarily being classified as an AI Persona.
The new badge is expected to begin appearing from mid-September across several parts of Spotify’s mobile app, including artist profile banners and About sections. It will also appear in Search and on track rows within playlists.
One of the biggest changes is how Spotify will handle recommendations. Music from artists identified as AI Personas will be excluded from personalised recommendations by default, giving users greater control over whether they encounter this type of content.
Starting August 11, artists can voluntarily disclose through Spotify for Artists that their profile represents an AI Persona. However, Spotify says it will not rely solely on artists to identify themselves.
The company will combine human review with AI investigative tools to identify profiles that may qualify for the label. Artists whose profiles are labelled by Spotify will be notified and given the opportunity to either confirm the classification through self-disclosure or appeal the decision.
Spotify’s move comes as AI-generated music and virtual artist identities become increasingly common across streaming platforms….
