They’ve once given Milli Vanilli mop head vibes, and even Shemar Moore in Diary of a Mad Black Woman. (Sorry, Shemar!)

But now, options are so much better – thanks to a little custom lace, knot details, wig availability, and inventive styling. Today’s options give scalp, fresh parts, Boho curls, and braids that may have people asking for your stylist’s number.

I tried two braided wigs this summer, and the girls may need to reconsider everything we thought we knew about them.

Braids Will Always Be That Girl

Braided hairstyles and carefree Black girl vibes go together real bad. They are the protective-style favorite for vacays, warm weather, and any season when we need a break from daily styling.

Braids give us Poetic Justice, Janet, and Brandy. They give us culture. They celebrate Black beauty through every intricate pattern and woven strand. We have Boho braids, micro braids, jumbo styles, cornrows, and nearly every length or color imaginable.

But not everyone can wear rock style.

Some women have fine or thinning edges. Others have experienced hair loss from alopecia. Tight or heavy braids can also place stress on the scalp and hairline.
