The brother of Nigeria’s Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, has been killed by bandits in Niger State, amid renewed concerns over escalating attacks by terrorists and other armed groups in the state.
Ahmed Yusuf, the village head of Galla in Borgu Emirate, was killed inside his palace by the attackers, according to Bologi Ibrahim, spokesperson to Niger State Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago.
Ibrahim disclosed this in a condolence statement issued on Wednesday, saying the governor was saddened by the killing of the traditional ruler, who was also the brother of the minister.
The latest incident adds to a series of attacks on communities in Niger State, where armed groups have increasingly targeted rural settlements, farmers and residents, heightening fears over the safety of communities and agricultural activities.
Ibrahim said Bago described the killing of Yusuf inside his palace as a demonstration of the “boldness and high level of insolence” of the bandits.
The governor urged security agencies to ensure that those behind the killing were apprehended and prosecuted.
“The killing of the village head in his palace is the demonstration of boldness and high level of insolence by the bandits,” Ibrahim quoted Bago as saying.
The governor commiserated with Abdullahi, the immediate family of the deceased, the people of Galla and the entire Borgu Emirate over the killing.
According to Ibrahim, Bago described Yusuf as a community leader who died while defending his subjects and urged his family and community to take solace in the life he lived.
