More than 100 individuals are at the heart of the book, Nigeria’s GSM Revolution at 25: Hall of Digital Pioneers and Players. They include presidents, vice presidents, governors, statesmen, ministers, regulators, chief executives, entrepreneurs, engineers, investors, corporate communicators, journalists and other key stakeholders whose decisions, sacrifices, investments and innovations helped transform Nigeria into one of Africa’s most dynamic digital economies.
The book is not simply a history of the introduction of GSM in Nigeria and the milestones that followed, although these are vividly and succinctly documented.
More importantly, it is the story of the people behind the revolution—those who conceived the vision, took difficult decisions, provided political and institutional support, invested capital, built networks, created businesses, regulated the industry, communicated the transformation and ultimately helped make mobile communication accessible to millions of Nigerians.
At the centre of this story is President Olusegun Obasanjo, whose administration took the historic decision to liberalise and democratise telecommunications through the GSM licensing process. His government provided the political will that gave birth to what would become one of Nigeria’s most consequential technological and economic transformations.
The role of Vice President Atiku Abubakar was also significant. At a critical stage, when moves within government could have undermined or scuttled the GSM initiative, Atiku provided the political support needed to keep the reform on course. His intervention helped protect an initiative that would eventually reshape Nigeria’s telecommunications landscape.
