And now, the forecast is in: at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event, Marvel Studios revealed that Maya Boyd will be suiting up with white tresses and glowing eyes to play Ororo Munroe, a.k.a. Storm, in the evolving world of the MCU. Boyd is expected to join Marvel’s new X-Men movie, currently slated for 2028.
The announcement follows years of fancasting, debates and a relentless request from many Storm fans for Marvel to choose an actress who visually reflects the African superhero they knew from the comics.
Boyd just completed her Broadway debut in Joe Turner’s Come and Gone opposite Taraji P. Henson and Cedric the Entertainer.
A Storm of Great Proportions
Ororo Munroe is one of the X-Men’s most powerful mutants, capable of manipulating weather and the atmosphere. Whether as a goddess, queen, mentor or leader of the X-Men, her history spans Africa and Wakanda, and her birthright and lineage across Marvel comics make her a character who can easily stretch across several Marvel films and universes.
For years, fans have clamored for Marvel to cast a dark-skinned Black actress, with conversation intensifying as the MCU reboot approached. Pointing to Ororo’s African heritage and decades of comic imagery depicting her as a dark-skinned African woman, fans suggested several actresses who could have easily slipped into the role.
