FCCPC: Major complaints consumers can file against products — and how to

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has urged consumers to seek redress when products or services fail to meet expected standards.

Tribune Online reports that the Lagos Zonal Office of the commission recently disclosed that it has resolved more than 15,000 consumer complaints received through its online portal and physical office in the Lagos Zone.

The Zonal Coordinator, Dr Olubunmi Otti, disclosed this during an interactive session with journalists at the commission’s office in Ikeja where she explained that consumers have a right to expect value for their money and can approach the FCCPC when their complaints are not satisfactorily resolved by service providers.

“The satisfaction and safety of Nigerian consumers are paramount to the commission and nothing more,” she affirmed.

In light of this, Tribune Online takes a look at major types of complaints consumers can file with the FCCPC:

1. Return and refund complaints

Consumers who are dissatisfied with products or transactions can seek redress over issues involving the return of products and refunds.

However, Otti explained that consumers should first engage the service provider before approaching the FCCPC if they remain dissatisfied with the response.

2. Product labelling complaints

Consumers can report concerns relating to the way products are labelled. The FCCPC also emphasised the importance of proper product labelling, noting that product labels should be provided in English.

Consumers can also report products with improper or inadequate labelling. The commission has encouraged consumers to come forward whenever they are dissatisfied with products or services provided by businesses.
