Anger and condemnation on Wednesday greeted the decision of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to freeze the account of the Osun State government.
Some organisations, including the state government, the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Accord, the Imole Campaign Organisation, condemned the anti-graft agency’s action with the ADC describing it as political terrorism.
Apart from this, the state governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, described the move as an illegality and a threat to democracy.
Speaking at a press conference in Osogbo on Monday, Adeleke said the state government received a letter from its bank in the morning, forwarding an instruction from the EFCC to freeze the account.
“This action was taken without any court order. We are supposed to be in a democracy, where the rule of law must always prevail,” the governor said.
Adeleke alleged that the EFCC action was part of a wider pattern of intimidation against Osun people ahead of the August 15 governorship election.
He cited the “deliberate paralysis of the local government system” and “daily harassment and arrests of Accord members” as examples.
The governor accused former Governor Gboyega Oyetola of ordering the attacks, arrests and harassment of Accord members.
“All these intimidation and attacks were carried out on the order of Gboyega Oyetola over an election his candidate cannot win,” he alleged.
According to him: “Several Accord members have been killed. 60 Accord members have been arrested and taken to Abuja and detained without any charges.”
