The United Kingdom High Commission has held talks with the Kabiru Turaki-led Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on the state of democracy in Nigeria, with discussions focusing on the shrinking space for opposition politics, the party’s leadership crisis and the country’s political outlook.
The meeting was attended by a delegation from the UK High Commission led by Senior Political Adviser, Dr Fortune Aldred, and Political Adviser (Cameroon), Stephen Asek, alongside members of the PDP leadership, including the National Secretary, Dr Wonyengikuro Daniel; National Treasurer, Dr Isa Abubakar; National Organising Secretary, Hon. Theophilus Dakas Shan; National Legal Adviser, Shafi Bara’u; Principal Private Secretary to the Chairman, Ibrahim Abdullahi, Esq.; and the National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Ini Ememobong.
A statement issued on Thursday by the National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Ini Ememobong, said the meeting featured extensive discussions on the state of Nigeria’s democracy and the role of the opposition in sustaining democratic governance.
According to the statement, the interactive session centred on what it described as the “current asphyxiation of the opposition”, the prolonged state-sponsored leadership crisis in the PDP, the possible candidature of former President Goodluck Jonathan in the 2027 presidential election, and the general political outlook ahead of the 2027 polls.
Speaking during the meeting, Turaki reiterated the party’s commitment to preserving Nigeria’s multi-party democracy.
He stressed the “need to ensure the survival of multi-party democracy and the opposition, which remain critical pillars of a thriving democratic system.”
