The Super Falcons have spent decades making the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations their kingdom. Now, for the first time in their illustrious history, that remarkable record hangs by a thread.

They have conquered Africa more than any other nation, won a record 10 titles (12 if the 1991 and 1995 editions are included), and have never failed to reach the knockout stages of the competition.

Wednesday night’s final Group C clash against Egypt is not just another group-stage fixture.

It is a battle to save Nigeria’s title defence, protect one of African football’s greatest legacies and avoid becoming the first defending champions in WAFCON history to crash out in the group stage.

After a shocking 3-2 defeat to tournament debutants Malawi in their opener before bouncing back with a courageous 1-0 victory over Zambia despite playing most of the game with 10 players, Justin Madugu’s side have given themselves another chance.
