Pan-African financial technology platform Moment has officially closed a $22 million Series A funding round. The investment was led by AlphaCode Venture Partners, with participation from returning backers General Catalyst and MultiChoice Group, along with new strategic investment from French media giant Canal+.

This latest capital injection brings Moment’s total funding to $55 million since inception, reinforcing its strategy to construct enterprise-grade digital payment collection, subscription billing, and revenue retention infrastructure across the continent. The funds will be deployed to expand its cross-border settlement network, enhance core platform resiliency, and accelerate expansion across key African growth markets.

Africa’s payments ecosystem is highly fragmented, with consumer preferences varying significantly by market:

  • South Africa: Despite high banking penetration, over two-thirds of retail transactions remain in-person at physical point-of-sale (POS) locations.
  • Nigeria: Real-time instant bank transfers dominate commercial flows, competing alongside cash, cards, and digital wallets.
  • East & West Africa: Mobile money networks thrive due to low traditional banking coverage, yet remain divided across dozens of non-interoperable telecom operators.

Moment addresses these structural divides by offering a unified infrastructure layer that supports the full spectrum of locally preferred payment methods, including debit/credit cards, mobile money wallets, real-time bank transfers, recurring direct debits, and a physical in-person acceptance network spanning over two million locations.
