The studio confirmed on its latest earnings call that Michael 2, the sequel to its blockbuster Michael Jackson biopic, is actively moving forward, with plans to begin production as early as late 2026 or early 2027. Motion Picture Group chair Adam Fogelson laid out a release window running from the end of 2027 into the first half of 2028, making the timeline tight but achievable if cameras roll on schedule. The closing title card of the original film, “His Story Continues,” was not a tease. It was a production announcement delivered in the credits of a movie that had not yet finished its theatrical run.
The commercial logic behind moving quickly is straightforward. Michael, directed by Antoine Fuqua and starring Jaafar Jackson as his real-life uncle, became Lionsgate’s highest-grossing film, with worldwide earnings reported at nearly $900 million during its theatrical run. The film also posted one of the strongest opening weekends ever recorded for a biopic. That kind of performance creates institutional pressure to follow up before the audience’s appetite for this specific story cools.
The original charts Michael Jackson’s rise from the Jackson 5 to global superstardom, culminating with the 1987 Bad tour. The sequel will presumably pick up from that point and move into the second chapter of one of the most documented and contested careers in popular music history, a chapter that includes the 1993 allegations, the 2005 criminal trial, and the years leading up to Jackson’s 2009 death.
