Google has introduced a new family-focused feature for Google Wallet that allows parents to create and manage secure digital balances for children under the age of 18, giving young users greater financial independence while keeping parents firmly in control.
The update is designed to help families teach responsible money management through supervised digital spending. With the new feature, children can make purchases using their Android phones or Wear OS smartwatches anywhere Google Pay is accepted, without needing their own traditional bank account.
To ensure safety, parents receive a range of built-in controls that allow them to monitor and manage how their children spend money.
Parents stay in control
Google says parents can set daily spending limits to help children develop healthy financial habits and avoid overspending. They can also review their child’s transaction history to keep track of purchases and choose to receive notifications whenever money is spent.
If a child’s phone or smartwatch is lost, parents can immediately lock the digital balance to prevent unauthorised transactions. They also have the option to unlock the account later or activate a temporary “spending timeout” whenever they want to pause spending.
The company says these safeguards are intended to strike a balance between giving children financial freedom and ensuring parents maintain appropriate oversight.
