Tyla Concert In Lagos: Singer Faces Social Media Backlash

Nigerians are reacting to the upcoming concert in Lagos of South African singer Tyla, with many calling for a total boycott.

The Grammy-winning singer had listed Lagos as part of her first headline world tour titled A POP World Tour on July 27 and was scheduled to perform in Lagos on December 22 before heading back to South Africa for shows in Cape Town and Johannesburg in January 2027, but this has sparked backlash that may not be unconnected to the xenophobic attacks on Nigerians in South Africa.

However, shortly after the announcement, some Nigerians took to social media to call for a boycott of the Lagos concert. The backlash is largely connected to renewed anger over alleged xenophobic attacks against Nigerians and other African nationals in South Africa.

It has also left the Nigerian community at large divided. For some Nigerians, the idea of welcoming a major South African entertainer to Lagos while Nigerians continue to express concerns about their treatment in South Africa does not sit well, while others think Tyla should not be faulted.

For social media activist Very DarkMan, he insists that the show will not happen, especially as Miss Universe Nigeria, Chidinma Adetshina, continues to battle deportation issues.

Solomon Buchi criticized the singer for not lending her voice to the xenophobic attack but now wants to perform in Nigeria.
