Galaxy Watch 9 is the first Galaxy smartwatch to get a clean way of installing software updates. Samsung introduced a feature that lets new firmware install in the background before the watch restarts, making updates less disruptive and more convenient.
This won’t be the first device to run seamless updates. Android Nougat started this a decade ago, but Samsung didn’t adopt it immediately. The Galaxy A55 was the first Samsung device to support it, with the Galaxy S25 extending it to flagships. Now, smartwatches are also getting this feature that reduces the downtime when installing updates.
Some users on X spotted the feature in the Galaxy Watch 9’s first software update since launch. The update included an August 2025 security patch. While installing it, users found that the watch could download and install the new firmware in the background while they used it.
It’s a useful addition because, without seamless updates, a device basically becomes unusable when installing updates. You have no choice but to wait until it’s completed. Seamless updates change that. Once everything is ready, simply restart it to finish the update.
