Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has confirmed that Nairobi has won selection as one of 300 cities participating in the 2026–2027 Youth Climate Action Fund. The decision opens a path for young people to access funding for climate projects in their communities.

Youth aged 15 to 24 in Nairobi will be eligible for climate grants of up to Ksh647,250, with applications now open for the fund.

Sakaja said the global cohort brings together cities across Africa, Europe, North and South America, Asia, Oceania, and the Middle East. He added that other participating cities include Kumasi in Ghana, Brussels, Copenhagen, New York City, Bogotá, and Madrid, which places Nairobi alongside cities worldwide backing youth-led climate action.

Under the programme, selected youth-led projects in Nairobi will receive micro-grants ranging from Ksh129,450 to Ksh647,250. Nairobi will also receive a total of Ksh6.47 million in funding to support the initiative.

The programme expects at least eight eligible youth-led climate projects to receive support. Nairobi residents aged 15 to 24 must submit a clear description of their proposed project, along with a simple budget that shows how they will use the funds.

Applications officially open on September 4, 2026, and the Nairobi City County Government will accept submissions through its official website. The deadline falls on October 16, 2026.

Youth-led groups that have not incorporated can still apply if they partner with a registered organization to act as a fiscal sponsor. Applicants must also show they can manage project funds and carry out the proposed activities.

The climate fund will prioritize projects that focus on waste reduction, recycling, and the circular economy, as well as urban greening. It will also back tree planting, biodiversity restoration, flood resilience, drainage…
