SPAR loses billions amid turbulent trading – Innovation Village

SPAR is navigating one of its most turbulent periods to date, marked by a devastating R10 billion loss in market capitalization since the beginning of 2026. After remaining relatively stable between 2023 and 2025, the company’s share price has nosedived by over 50% year-to-date, leaving its current market value languishing in the R8 billion range.

Recent financial updates have only fueled investor anxiety and caused the share price to plummet further:

  • Plunging Earnings: Headline earnings per share (HEPS) for the interim period ending March dropped by a steep 53.9% to just 123.6 cents.
  • Balance Sheet Strain: South African leverage is creeping dangerously close to covenant limits, leaving no room for further missteps. The company’s dividend has also been suspended.
  • Mounting Arrears: A growing proportion of the debt owed to the group by its independent retailers is now overdue, severely dragging down local operating profits.

Operational Blunders and International Retreat

The current financial squeeze is the culmination of several costly operational failures over the past few years. While its Irish operations remain remarkably steady and are currently propping up the group’s overall operating profit, SPAR’s other ventures have been fraught with difficulty:

  • The SAP Fiasco: A botched, multi-billion rand SAP software rollout at its main KwaZulu-Natal distribution center has severely disrupted operations. The rollout remains incomplete and continues to pose a material execution risk.
  • Failed Expansions: The group was forced to exit disastrous investments in Poland and Switzerland, and is actively looking to sell off its UK business.
