In a major disruption to South Africa’s institutional investment market, Absa has ousted Standard Bank to become the Master Custodian for the Government Employees’ Pension Fund (GEPF). With assets exceeding $218 billion (R3.5 trillion), the GEPF stands as Africa’s largest pension fund, supporting over 1.2 million active members and more than 565,000 pensioners and beneficiaries.
The competitive contract, which officially commenced in August 2026, marks the end of an era for Standard Bank, which had managed the fund’s safekeeping and administration for thirty years since its inception in 1996.

While the Master Custodian role is a new acquisition, Absa is no stranger to the GEPF. The financial group has maintained a robust transactional banking relationship with the Fund since 2001. Absa confirmed that its existing services, which include cheque deposit processing and comprehensive electronic banking solutions, will continue uninterrupted alongside its newly won custodial duties.
