Movie review: Onobiren – When survival shapes a woman’s story showcases girlchild struggles

Onobiren: When Survival Shapes a Woman’s Story is a Nollywood film that highlights some of the challenges faced by the girl child in Africa. The film depicts the ruggedness of the Niger Delta riverine community in a way that could almost attract tourists to witness the environment’s toughness.

Synopsis: Onobiren is a compelling story of womanhood, resilience, and self-determination that celebrates the modern African woman. Set in contemporary Lagos, the film follows Roli, a young woman who challenges expectations to forge her own path. Through ambition, ingenuity, and unexpected partnerships, she embarks on a journey of empowerment, identity, and community transformation.

Directed by Famous Odion Iraoya, the movie stars Ruby Akubueze, Bisola Aiyeola, Desmond Bryce, Deyemi Okanlawon, Norbert Young, and Patience Ozokwor, among others.

This drama centres on Roli, a woman with no particular dream, who exists to be swept by the winds of whatever opportunity or circumstance life throws her way. She finds herself leaving the riverine community in Delta State to make ends meet in the big city – Lagos. All she takes with her are her struggles and the little knowledge ingrained in her by her late father.

The Traditions

This film illustrates how, despite strong traditions that restrict women in certain societies, some men still challenge these boundaries by empowering women, especially young girls. That was the role played by Roli’s father, a fisherman who made sure his daughter accompanied him on fishing trips in the high seas. The resistance to his decision was a pleasure to witness, as those opposing her father’s choice had valid reasons to do so.
