OpenAI Launches ChatGPT Desktop App for Linux – Innovation Village

OpenAI has launched a dedicated ChatGPT desktop app for Linux, bringing its AI assistant and Codex tools to one of the major desktop platforms that had been missing from its lineup.

The Linux version is being released as a preview and is available worldwide. OpenAI said the launch follows repeated requests from the Linux community for an official desktop application.

“Linux has been one of the most-requested platforms for the desktop app,” the company said, adding that the release extends ChatGPT and Codex across every major desktop operating system.

Until now, Linux users could access ChatGPT through a web browser, but they did not have the same official desktop experience available to Windows and macOS users. The new application gives Linux users a dedicated way to access ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work and Codex from their desktops.

Which Linux distributions are supported?

OpenAI’s initial Linux release supports several popular distributions and their desktop environments.

The supported versions include:

  • Ubuntu 24.04 LTS
  • Ubuntu 26.04 LTS
  • Debian 13
  • Fedora 43
  • Fedora 44

Linux is fragmented across hundreds of distributions, so supporting every version individually would be impractical. However, the distributions selected by OpenAI form the foundation for many other Linux variants and downstream flavours.

This means some users running distributions based on the supported versions may also be able to use the application, although compatibility can vary depending on the specific distribution and desktop configuration.

The initial focus on major long-term-support and widely used distributions gives OpenAI a relatively broad starting point while allowing the company to expand compatibility over time.
