Nurses end 43-day strike after striking deal with Governors

KNUNM Secretary General Seth Panyako announced that the strike had been called off with immediate effect

The Kenya National Union of Nurses and Midwives (KNUNM) has officially ended its 41-day nationwide strike following a day-long closed-door meeting with the Council of Governors (CoG)

Announcing the decision with immediate effect, KNUNM Secretary General Seth Panyako while speaking on Wednesday, September 9 directed all union members to report back to duty within 24 hours to restore critical health services in public hospitals nationwide.

The strike had affected public health facilities and began on July 29, 2026.

“The powers conferred to me by the Electoral Commission Act Section 2, the Constitution of the Kenya National Union of Nurses and the Constitution of Kenya Act Compact 1, I hereby declare that the strike that commenced on the 29th of July 2026 is hereby called off and I urge the electoral members to resume duty immediately and in any case not later than 24 hours from now,” Panyako stated.
