How to Wash, Dry, and Style Your Lacefront Wig

Investing in a high-quality lace front wig was probably one of the best hair decisions I’ve made. I love the versatility and convenience of the wig, and being able to literally go to work in the morning with my twist out, then decide if I want to get fancy, and rock straight hair, I can do it later that night- for free!

Granted, the cost of the wig* was not cheap, but being that I used to protective style religiously, which included continuously buying hair, and paying for an install, I’m saving tons of money in the long run.

I’ve had my wig for a little over a month now. Since the hair is human hair, it is recommended and encouraged that you wash the hair, just like you would wash your natural hair. I was a bit nervous at first, and wasn’t really sure I could do it on my own, but I did it last week, and am currently wearing it now, and I can attest to the fact that it bounced back to its original state. Here is what I did:

1. Detangle the wig

This is very important. You want to make sure the wig is brushed through and completely detangled before you wash it. To do this, I took the wig off of my styrofoam wig stand and held it with one hand, and brushed it with the other, using a big brush.

2. Submerge in water

Before you add any shampoo, you should wet the wig completely, making sure every strand has been saturated.

3. Add conditioner

This is a personal preference, but I like to cowash* my wig, versus using shampoo. Shampoo can be a bit harsh, and for purposes of the wig, a simple conditioner will suffice to simply clean the wig and make sure any residue is completely gone.

4. Ring out and dry

Once the hair has been conditioned and rinsed….
