The Nigeria Police Force has paid N2.317 billion in insurance and welfare benefits to 2,971 beneficiaries and next-of-kin of police officers who died in the line of duty.
Olatunji Disu, Inspector-General of Police, presented the cheques to the beneficiaries on Thursday in Abuja, describing the payment as part of the Force’s institutional responsibility to families of officers who lost their lives while protecting Nigerians.
Disu said the total payment stood at exactly N2,317,177,094 and covered beneficiaries under the 2017/2018, 2018/2019, 2020/2021, 2021/2022, 2022/2023, and 2024/2025 insurance policy years.
According to him, the disbursement also included outstanding balances recovered from insurance companies after earlier partial settlements.
He said the payments were not discretionary but legitimate entitlements due to families of police officers whose lives were lost in the course of duty.
“Today, I am pleased to present benefits to 2,971 beneficiaries and next-of-kin of deceased police officers amounting to N2,317,177,094.00.
“Beyond the financial value of these cheques, this exercise carries an important message: the Nigeria Police Force will not abandon the families of those who paid the supreme price in our service,” the IGP said.
The police chief said the security environment in the country remained challenging, with police personnel continuing to face significant risks in the discharge of their duties.
He noted that several officers had been killed in attacks and security operations across different parts of the country, leaving families to cope with the loss of their breadwinners.
Disu specifically recalled the officers killed in Buni-Yadi, Yobe State, as well as members of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit who died during a rescue mission in Zamfara State.
