Google is bringing conversational AI and voice interaction deeper into its productivity apps, allowing users to talk to their inboxes, create documents through natural-language instructions and dictate notes without typing.
The company is rolling out three new features across Gmail, Google Docs and Google Keep: Gmail Live, Docs Live and Keep Live.
Google first previewed the features during its Google I/O conference in May, positioning them as a way for users to interact with its apps more naturally through conversation rather than traditional menus, search boxes and keyboards.
The features are now beginning to roll out to eligible users on iOS and Android, with support initially limited to English.
Gmail Live Lets Users Talk to Their Inbox
Gmail Live turns the inbox into something users can interact with conversationally.
Instead of typing keywords into Gmail’s search bar, users can ask a Gemini-powered AI assistant questions about the contents of their inbox.
The assistant can use information from emails to respond to questions, while a live transcript appears on screen as the conversation takes place.
This could make finding information across a large inbox easier, particularly when users do not remember the exact wording of an email or the keywords they would normally use to search for it.
Gmail Live is available to customers subscribed to Google AI Plus, Pro and Ultra plans.
Docs Live Turns Instructions Into Drafts
Google Docs is also getting a voice-driven AI experience through Docs Live.
With the feature, users can describe what they want to write rather than starting with a blank document and typing everything themselves.
The AI assistant can use the user’s instructions to help produce a first draft.
