Uber has announced that it will wind down its operations in Nigeria effective September 2, 2026, bringing a 12-year chapter in the country’s ride-hailing industry to a close.
The global mobility company disclosed the decision in a message to users, saying the move followed a review of its Nigerian business.
“After a thorough review of our business, we have made the tough decision to wind down our operations in Nigeria, effective 2 September 2026,” Uber said.
The company did not provide specific financial or operational reasons for the decision.
Uber Leaves Nigeria 12 Years After Lagos Launch
Uber launched in Lagos in 2014, becoming one of the early international ride-hailing companies to enter the Nigerian market.
Its arrival helped accelerate the development of app-based transportation in the country by allowing passengers to request rides through smartphones and connect with drivers using location technology.
Reflecting on its time in Nigeria, Uber thanked customers for using the platform for daily commutes, trips to visit family and friends, and other journeys.
“We know this may cause disruption to your routine, and we sincerely apologise for the inconvenience,” the company said.
Uber added that its Help Centre will remain available until September 23, 2026, to assist customers with outstanding account-related enquiries.
Driver Relations Have Faced Challenges
Uber’s Nigerian operations have not been without challenges.
Over the years, drivers working with ride-hailing platforms have repeatedly raised concerns about fares, commission charges and the cost of operating vehicles.
