The hardest part of a great life is when it ends. The impact a person has had and the difference they will make for generations to come cannot be taken for granted. Making an impact on Black culture and community, the people listed below deserve recognition for the roles they’ve played, which is why we honor them to ensure their legacies live on.
Carla Jeffery
Part of the Disney dynasty in the world of Zombies, Carla Jeffrey became a fan favorite for her portrayal of Bree, the bubbly human cheerleader who formed friendships and kinship with Zombies, werewolves, aliens and vampires across the franchise’s films, shorts and animated TV series.
Born on July 10, 1993, in Houston, Texas, she started her career as a child, appearing alongside Oscar®-winning actress Mo’Nique in the feature film Phat Girlz, and went on to star in films like Southland (2009) and American Vandal (2017). Her guest-starring roles on Disney Channel included Good Luck Charlie, Shake It Up! and Best Friends Whenever, and she also appeared on Curb Your Enthusiasm, iCarly and Game Shakers.
Carla Jeffery died on September 1, at age 33.
Cassandra Wilson
A Grammy-winning vocalist steeped in jazz, Cassandra Wilson was part of the influential M-Base collective and Blue Note Records, emerging as one of jazz’s most distinctive contemporary voices.
