Argentina legend Lionel Messi has announced his retirement from international football, saying he has given everything to the national team and believes the time has come to close the chapter.
The 39-year-old confirmed his decision on Monday, August 31, bringing an end to an extraordinary international career in which he became Argentina’s most-capped player and all-time leading scorer.
Messi has made 207 appearances for Argentina and scored 125 goals, while leading the country to the 2022 FIFA World Cup title in Qatar.
The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner also captained Argentina to the World Cup final this summer, where they lost to Spain.
‘I have nothing left to give’
In a statement posted on Instagram, Messi said his decision was painful but necessary as he makes way for a younger generation of players.
“Time is running short, chapters come to a close, and this is one that hurts me deeply,” Messi said.
“I love, have loved, and will always love being part of the national team.
“I’ve given it my all; I have nothing left to give, and besides, there are some really great young players coming through behind me who deserve their chance.”
Messi said he first wrote the retirement message on July 21, two days after Argentina’s defeat by Spain in the World Cup final.
Father’s death influenced decision
The Inter Miami forward also revealed that the death of his father, Jorge Messi, played a major role in his decision.
Jorge Messi died aged 68 after a long illness, and his death prompted the Argentina captain to reconsider his future in football.
“Today, after what happened with my dad, I’m even more convinced than before,” Messi said.
