Humpback Whales Return to Kenya’s Coast, Here’s Where You Can See Them

Kenya’s coastal waters are once again welcoming humpback whales as the marine mammals return for their seasonal migration. The arrival offers tourists and wildlife enthusiasts a rare opportunity to witness one of nature’s most spectacular journeys in the western Indian Ocean.

In an official statement released on Thursday, August 27, 2026, the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) urged local and international visitors to head to the coast to experience the annual event.

“From July to October, Kenya’s waters come alive as majestic humpback whales make their seasonal journey along our coast,” KWS said.

“And if you’re lucky, you could witness the magic up close a powerful blow, a spectacular splash, or a tail rising from the ocean, just like this!”

Marine Sighting Spots and the “Twin Migration”

KWS identified the Kisite-Mpunguti Marine Park along the southern coast as a prime front-row destination for whale-watching, encouraging travelers to include marine park excursions in their itineraries.
