Zimbabwe’s premier telecommunications provider, Econet Wireless, has officially finalized a comprehensive migration of its core operational systems to Google Cloud. Announced by CEO Douglas Mboweni on Thursday, this sweeping digital transformation encompasses the company’s vital mobile money platforms and extensive telecom infrastructure, permanently shifting them away from legacy on-premise computing and private data centers.
This migration represents the first major milestone in Econet’s multi-pronged digital strategy, which follows the recent unbundling of its cellphone tower operations into an independent entity.
Immediate Benefits and the “As-a-Service” Strategy
By transitioning to a globally recognized cloud infrastructure, Econet anticipates immediate internal improvements, specifically in network resilience, automated business continuity, and the accelerated deployment of new product features.
However, the second phase of Econet’s strategy pivots outward toward the business-to-business (B2B) market. The telecom giant plans to leverage its new cloud capabilities to offer third-party managed computing services to local Zimbabwean enterprises.
Mboweni explained:
The advantages offered by the cloud are not limited to mobile operators. Many organizations in Zimbabwe do not have the dozens of specialist engineers required to operate a private cloud, so Econet can manage that infrastructure on their behalf and provide it as a service.
