NFF President Ibrahim Gusau resigns amid corruption allegations

Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President Ibrahim Gusau and other members of the federation’s executive board have reportedly resigned amid mounting pressure over the decline of Nigerian football and allegations concerning the management of federation funds.

Gusau, NFF board members step down

Gusau and other board members reportedly resigned on Thursday, August 27, according to former Super Eagles media officer Obong Colin Udoh.

The development comes amid growing criticism of the NFF leadership following a series of setbacks suffered by Nigeria’s national teams on the international stage.

The NFF had also faced increasing pressure over governance and financial accountability, with questions raised about the management of funds allocated to the federation.

Super Eagles, Falcons suffer major setbacks

The Super Eagles failed to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, extending Nigeria’s absence from the global tournament.

The Super Falcons also suffered a major setback after missing qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Nigeria’s women’s team, defending champions of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, lost 1-0 to Cameroon in the quarter-finals of the 2026 tournament.

The defeat ended their title defence and sent Nigeria into the playoff route for a place at the 2027 Women’s World Cup.

The Falcons’ hopes were subsequently ended by a 2-1 defeat to South Africa’s Banyana Banyana in the qualification playoff.

The failure marked a historic low for the Super Falcons, who had qualified for every edition of the Women’s World Cup since the competition began in 1991.
