Joy Oladokun and Adekunle Gold wrote “Sage” over the phone in 2020, when the pandemic had shrunk everyday life to four walls and an uncertain future. Six years later, the song sounds unnervingly current . The track is the latest single from Oladokun’s forthcoming album, Hope Is A Heavy Thing, set for release on September 25 via Concord Records.

Produced by Oladokun with additional contributions from Nigerian producer Spellz, the song is a “sonic marriage of the music that raised” Oladokun . The Nashville-based singer-songwriter, born to Nigerian immigrant parents, has long moved between folk, soul, and pop, but here she brings African music to the forefront . Her soulful resonance meets the warmth of Adekunle Gold’s voice, with their vocals coming together in a chorus that carries traces of both folk and Afropop .

The 12-track album was written “to help myself find my light again after burning out,” Oladokun shared in a statement . It was produced in Nashville, New York, and on her tour bus, drawing from a wide range of inspirations: “the brilliance of the Soulquarians, the rawness of Bob Dylan, the rhythms of afrobeats, and the sampling prowess of J Dilla” . The tracklist also features songs like “Zombie” and “Kind,” with “Sage” sitting as its sixth track .
