Born January 19, 1946, in rural Tennessee, Dolly Rebeca Parton was the fourth of 12 children. Her family was extremely poor, and they lived in a two-room cabin. She began performing publicly while still a child and eventually moved to Nashville to pursue music.
2. She wrote her first song at age six, while her first single was at age 13
She wrote her first song at the age of six, titled ‘Little Tiny Tasseltop,’ based on a doll her mother made from a corncob.
In April 1959, her debut single, “Puppy Love,” which marked the start of her music career, was released on Goldband Records by Dolly Parton at age 13.
3. Her father’s illiteracy inspired one of her biggest legacies
Despite the inability of Dolly’s father, Robert Lee Parton, to read or write, she credited him with being extremely intelligent and business-savvy.
This led to the creation of Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library in 1995. The organization has since distributed over 300 million free books to children across the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and the Republic of Ireland.
4. Her hit song ‘Jolene’ was based on true-life events
Unknown to many, Parton’s 1973 hit song ‘Jolene’ was partially inspired by a true-life event involving a redheaded bank teller who flirted with her husband, Carl Dean. The singer decided to channel it into a masterpiece.
