Nigeria Approves Two New Satellites to Expand Broadband Coverage – Innovation Village

NIGCOMSAT-2A and NIGCOMSAT-2B are expected to extend connectivity to underserved communities while strengthening Nigeria’s communications and satellite capabilities.

Nigeria is moving ahead with plans to acquire and deploy two new high-throughput communication satellites after the Federal Executive Council approved the project, marking the next stage of the country’s effort to expand broadband access and strengthen critical communications infrastructure.

The satellites, NIGCOMSAT-2A and NIGCOMSAT-2B, will be deployed by Nigeria Communications Satellite Limited (NIGCOMSAT) under the supervision of the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy. The agency said the additional capacity is intended to extend connectivity to underserved, unserved and hard-to-reach communities while supporting broadcasting, enterprise connectivity and government services.

The approval does not mean the satellites are already in orbit. NIGCOMSAT said the project will now move into implementation, including engagement with technology partners, contract finalisation, technical planning and preparations for manufacturing, launch and deployment.

Expanding Connectivity Beyond Terrestrial Networks

The new satellites are intended to complement Nigeria’s terrestrial broadband infrastructure rather than replace it. Satellite connectivity can provide wider coverage in locations where conventional infrastructure such as fibre networks or telecommunications towers may be difficult or expensive to deploy.
