At the opening of The Crenshaw Rec, Nike Vice President and Head of Creative Zarna Surti set the intention for the space: it was not just a store; it was “rooted in culture, rooted in sport, and really rooted in community.” Walking into the space, you’re met with an experience that was shaped by actual community members, and you can tell. There is an “open gym” area for community programming, including music classes, run clubs, barbershop pop-ups and more. Relics from the community stretch from the entrance to the very back of the store. From photos of the Crenshaw High School basketball team to the jersey Kobe Bryant wore when he guest-starred on Moesha, you’re transported into a living history lesson on the legacy of the Crenshaw District.
