Sometimes you want to take a photo or a selfie without announcing it to the whole room. Unlike most Android phones, where individual manufacturers usually bury a dedicated shutter sound toggle somewhere in the camera settings, Apple has never given iPhone a direct on-off switch just for the camera click. Instead, the shutter sound is tied to your phone’s overall silent mode. Here is every method that actually works, and why it will not work at all for some readers.
Use the Ring/Silent Switch or Action Button
This is the fastest and most reliable method, and it is the one Apple itself documents in its support materials.
On iPhone models with a physical Ring/Silent switch, on the upper left edge of the phone, flip it toward the back of the phone. You will see an orange indicator when it is engaged. With the switch in silent mode, the camera shutter sound is muted along with your ringer and most other system sounds.
On iPhone 15 Pro, 15 Pro Max, and all iPhone 16 and later models, Apple replaced the physical switch with the customizable Action Button. By default, pressing and holding the Action Button toggles silent mode on and off, the same way the old switch did. If you have reassigned the Action Button to something else, such as launching the camera or the flashlight, you will need to toggle silent mode a different way instead, either from Control Center or from Settings.
Turn the Ringer Volume Down to Zero
If you would rather not put your whole phone into silent mode, you can instead turn down just the ringer and alerts volume, which also controls the shutter sound.
