If you have dug into your Galaxy phone’s system apps or noticed a quiet update in Settings > Google Services > All Services > System Services, you have probably run into an app called Private Compute Services. Most people scroll past it. I think it deserves a closer look, because it is doing more for your privacy than its bland name suggests.
Here is what Private Compute Services actually is, how it works, and why Google built it in the first place.
What Is Private Compute Services?
Private Compute Services (PCS) is a Google system app that acts as a privacy-preserving bridge between a secure part of Android called the Private Compute Core and Google’s cloud servers.
I like to think of it as the delivery pipeline for a locked room. The Private Compute Core is the locked room. Private Compute Services is the only approved courier allowed to bring anything in or take anything out, and even then, only under strict rules.
What Is the Private Compute Core?
The Private Compute Core is a secure, isolated section of Android, introduced with Android 12. It is where a handful of on-device AI features run, including:
- Live Caption, which generates captions for audio and video playing on your device
- Now Playing, which identifies music playing nearby and shows the title and artist on your lock screen
- Smart Reply, which suggests quick responses inside your messaging apps
Since Android 11, Android has prevented components inside this space from communicating directly with other apps. From Android 12 onward, the restriction goes further. Nothing inside the Private Compute Core has direct access to the internet.
