Tourists heading to the Masai Mara can either get there by road or by air, depending on their budget, time, and preferred travel experience.

According to Masai Mara Travel, the road distance from Nairobi to the Maasai Mara is about 225 kilometers, though the actual distance varies depending on the gate you use to enter the reserve.
Traveling By Road to Masai Mara
Driving from Nairobi to the Mara takes about six hours, including brief stops along the way.
The journey is shorter when using some of the eastern entry points, including Sekenani, Talek and Oloolaimutia gates.
The drive to the eastern gates, including Sekenani, Talek and Oloolaimutia, generally takes between 5.5 and 6 hours. Travellers heading to the western side of the reserve, including Musiara and Oloololo, should allow about 6 to 6.5 hours.
The journey can include short breaks, with Narok town serving as a convenient stop for fuel, refreshments, and washroom breaks.
From Nairobi, travellers can use the A104 highway before connecting to the B3 towards Narok. After arriving in Narok town, the route branches toward different Mara entry points, with the C12 serving destinations such as Sekenani, Talek, and Oloolaimutia, while the C13 leads toward Musiara and Oloololo.
The western route can be rougher in some sections, making a 4×4 vehicle a suitable choice, particularly for travellers heading to the western gates.
