Todd Boehly reportedly set to sell his part of Chelsea

Chelsea Football Club could be on the verge of another major boardroom shake-up, with Todd Boehly reportedly in talks to sell his stake in the club just four years after leading the consortium that ended Roman Abramovich’s ownership.

The proposed deal would hand even greater control to the majority owners, Clearlake Capital, and could mark the end of one of football’s most closely watched ownership partnerships. According to reports, Boehly and fellow investor Mark Walter are negotiating the sale of their combined minority stake to Clearlake Capital, which already owns 61.5% of Chelsea through BlueCo.

However, if the deal is completed, Clearlake’s ownership would rise to more than 86%, giving Behdad Eghbali and José Feliciano decisive control over the club. The discussions reportedly value Chelsea at more than £5 billion, a significant increase from the roughly £2.5 billion paid for the club in 2022.

Why is Todd Boehly willing to sell his share of Chelsea?

The talks come after a long period of reported disagreements between Boehly and Clearlake over Chelsea’s direction. Since taking over, the ownership group has invested heavily in transfers, but there have been differing views on recruitment, stadium redevelopment, and the club’s long-term strategy. Those differences have fuelled speculation for months that one side could eventually buy out the other.

What happens next at Chelsea?

No agreement has been finalised, and neither Chelsea nor Clearlake has officially commented on the negotiations. However, if the deal goes through, it would effectively end the joint-governance model that has been in place since the 2022 takeover and usher in a new era with Clearlake firmly in charge.
